After the Floods is a novel about disaster and recovery. It begins in post-Katrina New Orleans, where one effect of the storm is that crows and dogs are able to speak, and takes the reader up the Mississippi to a fictional town in Minnesota where time is "out of whack." It's magical realism, at once sad and hilarious and ultimately optimistic about our power to survive and move on.
