Use ground-cover plants to fill in bare spaces and to add color to your yard. Plants such as ivy, creeping phlox and juniper will spread over the ground, which prevents the growth of weeds, and also reduces the amount of lawn that needs to be mowed. Also, they increase your landscape’s depth, color and dimension.

Use native plants if you desire a distinctive, easy to maintain, and hardy landscape. Plant species that naturally thrive in your area and its climate are a lot more simple to take care of when compared to foreign ones. You can also use less water, as local plants won’t need additional water supply. You may want to choose plants that have leaf textures that are different from most other plants. The contrast between shape and texture when mixed together can add beauty and interest to your design. Make sure they are dispersed evenly for maximum appeal.

When planning your landscaping, try more than just a couple kinds of plants. This can protect your planting areas in the event a disease or insect colony shows up. By selecting a greater number of plants, you increase the odds of your landscape surviving. Diversity is key when planning a landscape project. Before you start any landscaping project, make sure you understand where your property lines are. This is even more important if there is no fence easily dividing your property from your neighbor’s. The last thing you want is to be sued by your neighbors for planting trees and shrubs on their land. Take a look at your property’s paperwork, as there should be a survey included in your documents. Never neglect paths and walkways, as they are critical components of any design. An unattractive concrete sidewalk is a big negative. Change this up by using cobblestone or stepping stones for a fresh look. You can find such items in lots of colors, textures and sizes, and at very reasonable prices.
